Re: "Skills needed" section

[edit]

Newbie editor here writing in regard to the "skills needed" section — I've cross-referenced other Wikipedia articles and haven't seen anything similar to it (not inherently a good reason), but after rewriting it it seems somewhat[?] redundant in my opinion.

Looking to learn, thanks. Smeegent (talk) 15:24, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Smeegent I agree this doesn't make much sense. The source cited also seems questionable. Jantokiilo (talk) 01:19, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of computer engineering in the lead

[edit]

I just noticed the brief edit war between @AvatarRr888: and @Remsense:. Maybe I'm missing a subtlety, but I think the primary issue regards whether computer science is part of computer engineering or not. The existing second sentence already seems to say that it is, but without a reference. I noticed that the first sentence does have a reference, though, and the quote from that reference seems to establish the point: "Computer System engineering has traditionally been viewed as a combination of both electronic engineering (EE) and computer science (CS)." Thus, it seemed a bit heavy-handed to revert the change three times for not having a source, when a great source was already there on that sentence.

Personally, I don't see CS as part of computer engineering. I feel like CS is SW and computer engineering is HW. The old definition worked for me, but apparently the industry feels differently.

I also noticed that the recent edit included the addition of CE as an abbreviation for Computer Engineering, and this was reverted. CE is the only abbreviation I've ever heard for Computer Engineering. I've never heard CoE or CpE. I just found the 2016 update to the 2004 joint report from IEEE and ACM. It's very explicit about CE being the abbreviation: "The field of computer engineering (CE) has developed, matured, and expanded throughout industry." And the abbreviation is used hundreds of times in the document. So I hope you won't mind, but I'm going to add this abbreviation to the lead. If either of you do mind, I'm happy to discuss it here until we get a consensus. Davemc0 (talk) 20:20, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

CompE abbreviation

[edit]

CompE is a common abbreviation for computer engineering. I think it’s worth adding Retr0r0cketVersion2 (talk) 03:33, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If nobody is objecting, I’ll add it in a week Retr0r0cketVersion2 (talk) 20:22, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Professions Subsection

[edit]

The Professions Subsection is arguably mislabeled (it’s about certifications), but those certifications are also generally irrelevant. Fields involving certifications in CpE are extremely rare (emphasis is placed on education level and experience instead of certifications) and do not have any form of standardization which that subsection states.

TL;DR it’s mislabeled, but even then what it states is extremely rare and non-standard because it doesn’t align with employment in the field Retr0r0cketVersion2 (talk) 20:45, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Benefits of Engineering in Society Section

[edit]

I read the “ Benefits of Engineering in Society” section and it seems to be a bunch of techno fluff filler that doesn’t add anything much and should be in another page like Engineering in Society Septagram (talk) 04:29, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Completely in agreement with you. There is almost nothing there pertaining to computer engineering and regardless as it’s not about the benefits of computer engineering, it doesn’t make sense to even have in the article Retr0r0cketVersion2 (talk) 20:10, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
