Is it even a genre?
[edit]We have to keep in mind that "Phonk" is some ambiguous term. Many ave rejected the idea that Brazilian Phonk is a subgenre of phonk. I think we should address that. DreepyWiki (talk) 14:18, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- I personally feel like it should not be regarded as phonk at all as it has absolutely no similarities with phonk. Phonk is a subgenre of hip-hop originating in the late 2000's-early 2010's, heavily influenced by 1990's Memphis rap and Houston chopped and screwed music. It is mainly a sample based genre, typically using samples from the two scenes i mentioned earlier and contemporary hip-hop music (such as vocal chops and drum loops), as well as funk, soul, jazz, vaporwave, video games, anime, etc, it may also use the chopped and screwed technique. Phonk music typically has a gritty, lo-fi aesthetic reminiscent of memphis rap. Brazilian "phonk" does NOT share any of these characteristics whatsoever, which is why it should not be referred to as phonk music. NWES333 (talk) 04:27, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
It shouldn’t have a Wikipedia page

Confusion Between Phonk and Funk
[edit]In the 2020s, a notable trend emerged on music platforms and social media: the widespread mislabeling of Brazilian funk (funk carioca) as phonk. This confusion, driven by algorithmic playlists, viral TikTok edits, and a global audience unfamiliar with the cultural roots of either genre, has led to significant genre distortion.
Phonk, originating from Southern U.S. hip-hop and characterized by Memphis rap samples, cowbell-heavy beats, and chopped-and-screwed aesthetics, is stylistically and culturally distinct from Brazilian funk, which is rooted in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas and built on tamborzão rhythms, call-and-response vocals, and percussive breaks.
Despite these differences, the similarity in pronunciation—especially among non-native English/Portuguese speakers—and the shared presence in high-energy online video edits (such as anime, soccer, or car content) has led many listeners to conflate the two. This mislabeling is often amplified by Spotify playlists, TikTok hashtags, and YouTube titles that use "phonk" to tag music that is in fact Brazilian funk or an unrelated hybrid of styles. - Based on what I know about music genres, that's fairly accurate, but you'll need reliable sources before it can be incorporated into the article — 🪫Volatile 📲T | ⌨️C 06:38, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
