Plot summary
[edit]I have re-reverted. The edit summary of my previous edit stands, (rm much interpretation, editorialising, verbiage) and there was no reason given for the reversion of that edit. In case an editor feels a need to revert again, or to edit in a similar manner, I expand upon my edit summary here.
The plot section is a general outline of the main events and not a blow-by-blow account of everything that happens, nor everything the editor can remember.
Being a primary source, the film may be used on Wikipedia only to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts. Editors must not analyse, evaluate, editorialise, interpret, or synthesise the material. Say what happens, do not attempt to "explain" it. Do not attempt to re-create the emotional impact of the work.
If a pupil purchases an extravagant valentine for a teacher, the reader hardly needs to be told that it is "a gesture of affection". Were it anything other, a sarcastic stab say, or intended to create disharmony, that would be worth mentioning. Nor is it required to explicitly state that the pupil is fond of the teacher–less still that he "harbors deep admiration" for her. That phrase is a product purely of the editor's fevered imagination, it features nowhere in the plot. While we're about it, the gift is described as expensive, not "oversized". It looks large, yes, but it is expensive and these are children.
Meanwhile, Lucy attends a puppet show with Charlie Brown serving as the narrator. (Why meanwhile? Why serving as?)) In this theatrical presentation, (sorry, which theatrical presentation? Oh, this theatrical presentation! The single one and only theatrical presentation in question! I wasn't sure) Snoopy conveys a narrative centered on (at this point I am tempted to ask, Basil Fawlty style, what is the matter with you?) the nature of true love. At home, (blah) Sally struggles to fashion a proper (blah) valentine, ... However, (blah, the first of FOUR "however"s) his efforts are soon (and blah) overshadowed by Snoopy ...
"On Valentine’s Day, the group gathers to exchange cards and candy." And a sentence later: "During the celebration, each member of the group receives their respective valentines and candy hearts." So they gather to exchange cards and hearts, and, they receive cards and hearts. Who'da thunk?? And they don't just "exchange cards and candy", they gather to exchange cards and candy. (Hint: often if you're saying one somethings to something, like manages to, gathers to, you can just say the something. The group exchanges. Linus doesn't experience disappointment, he is disappointed. But even that is interpretive editorialising, no one in the work says Linus is disappointed, the reader–just like the viewer–is to infer from what actually happens).
"...it becomes painfully evident..." To whom? Someone in the work? No, to you, the viewer, the editor, outside the work. Editorialising. Don't do it.
"Both Charlie Brown and Linus respond to their disappointment in distinct ways. In a fit of frustration ..." Thanks for telling me they respond in distinct ways, I'd be unable to tell otherwise. What are these ways? Perhaps we'll come to that. Goodness, I'd have had no idea why Linus was acting so weirdly, it's a fit of frustration you say? So glad you could unravel that bizarre, otherwise-inexplicable chocolate throwing. It's also frustration that ignites Charlie Brown's attack on the mailbox you say, but didn't you previously helpfully explain it was disappointment in both cases? Never mind, Charlie Brown has attempted to kick his mailbox. Lucky he didn't actually kick it or he could have injured his foot. Oh he did hurt his foot? Probably should have said he successfully attempted to kick it. Or, y'know, not. And it's good to know he didn't intend to hurt his foot, that was inadvertent. But just in case we're still uncertain how Charlie Brown came to hurt his foot, he did it in the process. Good to have that cleared up.
"still clinging to hope" ... "Shortly thereafter" ... and, lawdy, "perceptive of her insincerity" it just goes on.
Having visited the editor's talk page and seen the juvenile rudery with which they respond to others calling out their disruptive editing, and the boorish, overblown yet immature language they use to engage with others, I have been more forthright in my criticism than I might. I see the editor has made many contributions of musical and soundtrack facts and figures, I trust those efforts are useful. That lies outside my proficiency, I'm much more about succinct, concise, well formed plot summaries, and this ain't one. Their prolix writing puts one in mind of having gorged upon a dictionary and belching up indigestible gobbets. The pretentious prolixity is only part of the problem; tautology, interpretation, editorialising are in the mix. I respectfully suggest they steer clear of prose and concentrate on facts and figures at least until they have some control over their ridiculous verbosity.
