Listing of Endorsements

[edit]

I suggest that endorsements from current MNAs be listed ahead of former MNAs or ministers. That is the case currently in the French version of this page. From my experience having played organizational roles in a few leadership campaigns over the past 20 years, the most important endorsements in a leadership contest are those from current caucus members. The impact of an endorsement depends on many factors and they are often subjective. However, all else being equal, endorsements from current caucus members are uniquely and unquestionably consequential for a number of reasons:

  • they are current, meaning (at least on paper) their acceptability by the public have been demonstratively tested reasonably recently
  • they are more likely to bring with them organization resources
  • they have the largest direct stake in the outcome and therefore are much more likely to get personally involved in the campaign
  • they are the only group which can reliably get their messaged reported by reporters covering the relevant legislature should they choose to do so

I also suggest that former ministers be listed among former MNAs and not as a separate category, with their ministerial title noted, just like former federal ministers would be listed among former MPs. (Though I feel less strongly about this one. The value of endorsements from such former ministerial titles diminishes rapidly once you are more than a couple terms out of government.
