- ... that in the 2025 Grand National, Micheal Nolan received a 10 day suspension for having made his horse keep racing even when it was showing signs of tiring?

- Not a full review, but unsure if compliant with WP:DYKBLP. Bremps... 05:18, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- This is now on ITN, which I think renders it ineligble for DYK. Bcp67 (talk) 20:12, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- Agree that there is a WP:DYKBLP issue with mentioning Micheal Nolan in the hook. How about Irish trainer Willie Mullins saddling first, second and third? Southdevonian (talk) 18:07, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]I'm really not sure why the race can't be posted at WP:ITN where it has been nominated since Sunday 6 April (see WP:In_the_news/Candidates#Grand National). There are four opposes, but I do not see that any of them are still justified. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:52, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]I changed the wording in the intro from "but was later found to have been caused by a lung infection" to just saying he got a lung infection subsequent to his collapse because the BHA has been careful to say the "episode" was not a direct cause of his death, rather than saying it was unrelated. Southdevonian (talk) 20:08, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- That seems quite reasonable. I'm still pondering the careful vagueness of the BHA statement "
... the exercise-associated episode experienced by the horse after the race had concluded by the time of death.
" Well yes, surely, at the time of death, most of the "episodes experienced by the horse" had concluded. I'm not convinced that any pre-existing infection and the exhaustion caused by the race can really be separated. Perhaps the statement is nothing more that some kind of face-saving exercise? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:45, 10 April 2025 (UTC)- I got the impression from the BHA statement [3] they were just being cautious. The obvious conclusion would be that the episode had caused the compromised immune system that left him vulnerable to infection, but perhaps they cannot be sure about that. Southdevonian (talk) 21:58, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, perhaps just cautious. The search for a single cause of death is somewhat illusory. I'm sure none of the animal rights and welfare bodies, which have voiced concerns, will be in the least bit reassured or satisfied. Just my opinion. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:10, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
- The thing is thoroughbreds are a fragile breed. All that selecting for speed above all else has led to various genetic health problems, like bleeding lungs, fragile limbs, sensitivity to heatstroke, and susceptibility to various diseases. They are all descended from 3 stallions imported to England in the late 17th century, and are now very in-bred. MaxBrowne2 (talk) 02:33, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Is this for real? This reminds me of Alkibiades winning the olympic chariot race or that Simpsons skit ("they both got the same coach and promoter, this will be a good clean fight")
- I can confirm that the 2025 Grand National was indeed a real race, with real horses and real jockeys. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:39, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
