Presence of Larned

1912 was a key year with the removal of the challenge round and while this is noted appropriately the comment suggests the defending champion may have played the main draw. Larned, a seven time champion, did not play this year or later due to his effective retirement due to deteriorating health earlier in 1912. I think a note to this effect is relevant.
