The incumbent councillors for Montagu and East Wards were returned unopposed, the incumbent councillor in West Ward faced Independent challenger P. W. Johnstone who ran unsuccessfully last year.[31][32][33]
The election was won by Johnstone.[34][35]
Following the council receiving a petition from over 100 ratepayer requesting it, the council planned for a poll on deciding the day of a half-holiday be held alongside the election.[36]
