Peter Mangione (born August 25, 2001) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward for MLS Next Pro team FC Cincinnati 2. He played college soccer for the Penn State Nittany Lions, earning two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Early life and college career

Mangione grew up in a soccer family in Hunt Valley, Maryland, and attended Dulaney High School.[1][2] He started out with Baltimore Celtic and Baltimore Armour before playing one season with Orlando City FC in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.[1] He was ranked by IMG Academy among the top 50 recruits of the 2020 class.[3]

Penn State Nittany Lions

Mangione scored 6 goals with 6 assists in 11 games in his freshman season with the Penn State Nittany Lions (which was held in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and was named to the Big Ten Conference all-freshman team.[1] In his sophomore season in 2021, he scored 7 goals with 4 assists in 21 games as both midfielder and striker. He contributed one goal and two assists during the Big Ten tournament, winning the conference championship. He was named first-team All-Big Ten and the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year at the end of the season.[1]

Mangione became co-captain of the Nittany Lions alongside Seth Kuhn in his junior season in 2022.[4] He led the team with 8 goals and added 2 assists in 16 games, repeating as first-team All-Big Ten.[1] In his senior season in 2023, he scored 10 goals with 4 assists in 19 games, co-captaining Penn State back to the final of the Big Ten tournament. He was named first-team All-Big Ten for a third time and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for a second time.[1][5]

Mangione signed his first professional contract on February 27, 2024, signing an MLS Next Pro contract with FC Cincinnati 2.[6] He scored his first goal for the team on April 2, 2024, scoring the second goal in a 4–1 victory over Atlanta United 2.[7] He finished his first professional season with 2 goals and 3 assists, appearing in all 28 games as Cincinnati 2 won the Eastern Conference regular-season title.[8][9]

Mangione was called up to FC Cincinnati for the first time on February 18, 2025, ahead of games in the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup.[10]

Personal life

Mangione is the youngest of five children born to Sam and Katie Mangione.[1] He is a cousin of Luigi Mangione, a man who was arrested in connection with the killing of Brian Thompson in 2024.[2] He is also the cousin of Nino Mangione, a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, and the grandson of real estate developer and Maryland businessman Nicholas Mangione.
