Pınarbaşı (Kurdish: Matarê;[2] Syriac: Maṭarī)[3][a] is a village in the municipality and district of Bismil, Diyarbakır Province in Turkey.[5] The village is populated by Kurds of the Barava tribe and had a population of 218 in 2022.[1][2]

History

[edit]

Maṭarī (today called Pınarbaşı) was historically inhabited by Syriac Orthodox Christians.[4] In the Syriac Orthodox patriarchal register of dues of 1870, it was recorded that the village had twenty-six households that owed dues, of whom eight paid, and was served by one priest.[3] There was a church of Yūldaṯ Alohō.[3] It was located in the district of al-Bahramakiyyah.[3] There were 150 Syriacs in 1914, according to the list presented to the Paris Peace Conference by the Assyro-Chaldean delegation.[6]
