Life and career

[edit]

Oliver Savile was born on 8 July 1989 in Buxton[2], Derbyshire. His father worked as a salesman and his mother was employed in the IT sector[3]. He developed an interest in acting after attending with his father a performance of Blood Brothers at Buxton Opera House, which led him to join a local drama group[2][3].

Savile has spoken openly about his struggles with severe dyslexia, which contributed to him failing his GCSEs.[3][2]. After retaking the exams, he enrolled in a BTEC course in Musical Theatre[3][2]. In 2007, he was accepted into the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts[2][1], where he pursued a degree in Musical Theatre, although his initial intention had been to study drama[2][3]

Short before completing his training in 2010[2][3], he was cast in the role of one of the brothers in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat[1][2][3]. Soon after, he appeared at the Theatre Royal in Wakefield in Sleeping Beauty[1]. In 2011, he joined the international tour of Mamma Mia! as a member of the ensemble, also serving as the understudy for the role of Sky[1][2][3]. In 2012, he appeared in the musical Monkey Business, based on the biography of The Monkees, portraying William/Peter Tork[1][3][4]. That same year, he performed Enjolras in Les Misérables at the Queen's Theatre[1][2]. In multiple interviews, he revealed that he once fell into the orchestra pit - landing on its safety net - during a matinee performance of Les Misérables, an incident he considers one of his most significant on-stage mishaps[2][5][6].

Following his performance as Rum Tug Tugger in Cats[1] in 2013, Savile was cast in The Phantom of The Opera in 2014 as a member of the ensemble and understudy for the role of Raoul[1]. His West End debut came in 2016, when he played Fiyero in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre as part of the musical's 10th anniversary celebrations[2][3][7]. In 2018, he portrayed Sir Hugo in Knights of the Rose[1][8] and Robert in Company in 2018[1]. In the following year, he appeared as Whizzer in Falsettos at The Other Palace[1][9], alongside Daniel Boys, Laura Pitt-Pulford, Joel Montague and Gemma Knight-Jones[9]. In 2019, he was cast as Gideon in Sting's musical The Last Ship[2][10] for its U.S. tour, which was later interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic[2].

During the COVID-19 pandemic, with theatrical productions suspended and without an acting contract, Savile trained to become a certified arborist and worked for a company providing garden maintenance services[2][11]. In 2021, he made a brief television appearance as Luca in the series Ted Lasso[1][2]. In 2022, he was cast in the role of Frank N. Furter for the European tour of The Rocky Horror Show, performing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland[1][12][13][14]. Upon returning to the United Kingdom, in the same year, he played the Prince in Emojiland[15][16], working together with Olly Dobson, Louise Dearman, Hannah Lowther and Natalie Paris[16]. In 2023, he took on the role of Frank in Annie Get Your Gun[1][17] at the London Palladium, and later that year began touring the United Kingdom as Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman, alongside Amber Davies, Natalie Paris and Ore Oduba[1][2][18]. In 2024, he reprised the role of Frank N. Furter for a second Swiss-Austrian-German tour of The Rocky Horror Show, which concluded in spring 2025[19][20].

Savile follows a vegan lifestyle[5]. He was previously in a relationship with fellow performer Melissa James, whom he met while working on Cats[3][21]. He later began dating actress Sydnie Hocknell, with whom he worked on Pretty Woman and The Rocky Horror Show[20][22]. He is an avid motorcycle enthusiast and owns a Triumph Bonneville[19][20][23]. He is also a keen video game player[3][5].
