Noida International Airport (IATA: DXN, ICAO: VIND)[2][3][4][5] is an international airport near Jewar in YEIDA city of Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh state of India. It is projected to become the largest airport in both India and Asia,[6][7][8] with plans to handle 12 million passengers annually in the phase-1, growing to 60-120 million by 2050 in subsequent phases.[9] Noida and Hisar International Airports are being developed as an alternative to heavily trafficked IGI Delhi Airport under the NCR Plan,[10] with Noida airport set to be the third commercial airport in the Delhi NCR region, after IGI Delhi and Hindon Airports.[11][12]

History

Noida International Airport's (originally proposed in 2001 as a greenfield Taj International Aviation Hub by then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh)[13][14] journey has been marked by shifts in location and political changes.[15][16] Initially planned near Greater Noida, the project faced delays due to its proximity to Delhi's IGI Airport and GMR Group's right of first refusal. The project was briefly considered for Agra under a different state government,[17][18][19][20] but was eventually revived and moved back to Jewar in 2014.[21][13][22][23][24]

Phase-1

[edit]

The Union Government approved the airport in June 2015 and Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) gave an in-principle approval to the Uttar Pradesh government to build the airport in May 2018.[24] After further planning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of phase-1 of Noida International Airport on 25 November 2021.[25] Noida International Airport phase-1 is being developed by Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) through a public-private partnership (PPP model).[26] In 2019, Flughafen Zürich AG, the operator of Zurich Airport in Switzerland, won the bid to build and operate it for 40 years.[27] Tata Projects Limited was awarded the civil construction tender in June 2022, aiming for net-zero emissions.[28][29] In 2023, IATA assigned the airport's code as 'DXN'.[30] Originally slated for opening in September 2024,[31] delays have pushed the commercial operation date to June 2025.[26][32][33]

Phase-2

[edit]

Subsequence phases will see further development including additional terminals and runways with the target passenger capacity of 60-120 million by 2050.[9]

Connectivity

[edit]

An integrated multi-model transport hub comprising air, rail, metro, RRTS, highways, expressways, and short and long distance bus terminals, taxi and bike ride hailing ranks is planned.

Last-mile connectivity

[edit]

Direct buses from the airport have been planned to various feeder town in the catchment area of the airport, including to Delhi city and Airport, Hindon Airport, Noida, Faridabad, Palwal, Gurugram, Hisar Airport, etc. Noida Airport is 36 km (22 mi) from Bulandshahr, 38 km (24 mi) from Palwal, 40 km (25 mi) from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida, 70 km (43 mi) from Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Mathura, 65 km (40 mi) from Aligarh, 65 km (40 mi) from Gurgaon and 130 km (81 mi) from Agra.[34]

Airports

[edit]

Alternate functional nearby airports with scheduled commercial flights are:

  • IGI Delhi Airport (IATA: DEL), 90 km northwest: has domestic and international flights to numerous locations.[10]
  • Hindon Airport (IATA: HDO), 85 km north: has domestic flights to several locations.
  • Hisar Airport (IATA: HSS), (270 km northwest of Noida International Airport and 190 km northwest of IGI):[35] has domestic flights and is being upgraded to an international airport by 2030 under the NCR Plan as an alternate to the IGI Airport.[36]

Road

[edit]

The Noida International Airport (NIA) is connected with various highways

Railway

[edit]

Metro trains

[edit]

    • Noida Film City-Noida Sector 142 PRT (studies and DPR done, construction yet to commence): will provide partial alternative connectivity to Noida and Delhi, as some of the route will be same as above (Greater Noida-Noida Airport Metro).[41][42][43]

Semi-High Speed Railway

[edit]

  • Ghaziabad-Jewar RRTS (under-planning): 71.1 km long rapid rail with 11 stations costing ₹16,000 cr, will be completed in 2 phases by 2031.[44]

  • Palwal-Noida International Airport-Khurja Railway (PNAKR line, under-construction): A 61 km railway line will connect Noida Airport to Palwal (28 km west on the New Delhi-Mumbai main line) and Khurja (33 km east on the Amritsar-Kolkata Howrah–Delhi main line), featuring a new railway station at the airport.[45]
    • Noida International Airport-Chola Railway (under-construction): A 20 km branch of the PNAKR line will link a multi-logistics hub at Noida Airport to the existing Chola railway station, located to the west on the Howrah–Delhi main line.[45]

High-Speed Railway

[edit]

Issues

[edit]

Poor connectivity

[edit]

Reaching the upcoming Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar presents a challenge due to its distance from major locations like Delhi and Noida. Current public transport options are limited, but plans are in place to introduce city bus and electric taxi services. Longer-term solutions, such as a rapid rail corridor planned for 2030, are far away. Experts emphasise the importance of comprehensive public transport for the airport's commercial success and financial viability, drawing comparisons with the well-connected IGI and Bengaluru airports.[48]

Ecological threats

[edit]

Despite environmental ministry conditions for Noida airport's approval requiring the protection of Dhanauri Wetlands, the Uttar Pradesh government has reportedly ignored these conditions. The wetland has not been designated as a Ramsar Site, its land has been allocated for construction by YEIDA, leading to a reduction in its area, and it remains under threat.[49]
