"Never There" is a song by the American rock band A Course of Action.[1] The song was from their debut album Dark Before the Dawn released on May 1, 2011.[2] "Never There" was officially released as the album's lone single on June 21, 2013.[3]

Background and recording

[edit]

The recording process involved several months of arrangement, tracking, and refinement, with the band taking full control over the technical and creative aspects. Final mixes were handled in-house, and the song was mastered alongside the rest of the album in early 2011.[4]

The track was developed at the band’s home studio in Connelly Springs, North Carolina. The song marked one of the final additions to the record and was completed shortly before the band finalized the album’s production.[5]

According to the band, "Never There" was one of the more personal tracks on the album, drawing on themes of emotional distance and unresolved tension. The song’s title reflects a feeling of abandonment or invisibility in personal relationships, which the band aimed to translate sonically through dynamic shifts in instrumentation and vocal delivery.[6]

"Never There" was the band's final release to feature bass player and founding member Tony Hawkins after he announced his departure from the band in December 2011, opting to retire from the music industry completely.[7]

Release and promotion

[edit]

Although the album Dark Before the Dawn was released in May 2011, "Never There" wasn't released as a single until 2013 due to the band financing the marketing of their releases themselves without a record label's backing.[8]

On June 1, 2013, "Never There" was featured on the compilation album Willful Wreckords: Punched, an album that features a compiled number of songs from different independent artists who were unsigned at the time of the album's release.[9]

"Never There" was officially released on June 21, 2013, as the lone single from Dark Before the Dawn.[10]

Charts

[edit]

During a interview with Rock Revolt Magazine lead singer John Culberson revealed the song achieved moderate success in local radio stations. It did exceptionally well on Untapped Radio's Top 10 Rock Songs for several months, peaking at number two.[11]
