MediaWiki talk:Bad image list

MediaWiki:Bad image list prevents the transclusion of certain images when linked to in files, except for specified pages (i.e. [[File:Example.jpg]] would be rendered as File:Example.jpg instead of being embedded in the article if on this list).

Description

The images and other media files listed on MediaWiki:Bad image list are prohibited by technical means from being displayed inline on pages, besides specified exceptions. Images on the list have normally been used for widespread vandalism where user blocks and page protections are impractical.

Making requests

Requests for additions, removals, or exceptions may be made on this page. Any administrator can make changes to the list. If there is no response after a reasonable time, consider repeating a request at the Administrators' noticeboard. If the file in question has no foreseeable good faith use, consider nominating it for deletion rather than requesting its addition to this list.

Posting to the list

The format is as follows: Only bulleted list items (lines starting with "*") are considered. The first link on a line must be the link to the high-risk image. It is recommended that you use an initial colon in this link, so people can view this page without seeing all the restricted images. Any subsequent links on the same line are exceptions, i.e. articles where that image is allowed to be displayed inline. Text outside of links is ignored and can be used for comments. Piped links cannot be used. Please check the spelling of potential duplicate images before removing.

Image description page

A bot will place {{Restricted use}} on the image description page. This will advise users how to request that the image to be allowed on articles (that is, to expand the except list for it).

Removal from the list

When removing deleted images from the list, please double-check that the relevant image talk page has been deleted as well.

@Paprikaiser: I have just noticed that this image is non-free and used under a fair use rationale. Without a separate fair use rationale for the list page, it will be removed by a bot from that page. I'm not really sure a fair use rationale could be written; see Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Non-free_image_use_in_list_articles, but in any case writing it is beyond the scope of this page. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 22:43, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: I would just note that this list contains one image of the flag of Hezbollah which is not released under a free copyright licence. See the list entry for details. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Normally, you can use images in the bad image list outside Wikipedia. The bad image list only exists to protect Wikipedia from vandalism that uses those images. However, the image you are referring to is suspected to be copyrighted. I am not a lawyer, so I cannot tell you whether your described purpose would fall under fair use. If you want to be safe, you need to contact the creator (suspected to be A. Wyatt Man) to get permission to use the image in your magazine, or look for a similar image under a free licence.
