Maktabi
Maktabi is a surname often referring to the Maktabi family rooted in Iran during the years 1600–1800. The Maktabi family in Persia included teachers that ran schools in Isfahan. They moved from Isfahan to Damascus in the late 1800s and started trading in antiques and rugs. In the early 1900s, Ali Akbar Maktabi decided to move from Damascus, Syria to Beirut, Lebanon an opened the first shop in 1928. Ali Akbar took over the role of guardian for his deceased brother's children, who were brought to Beirut. The family picked up carpets from the brothers in Iran and created the foundation for one of the largest carpet families. From Beirut the family prospered as carpet merchants where they made a fortune then expanded to e.g. Saudi Arabia, Doha in Qatar, Istanbul in Turkey, Copenhagen in Denmark, Oslo in Norway and Zurich, Switzerland.[citation needed].
The word "Maktabi" (مكتبي) originates from Arabic and means "office worker", "academic", or "learned person". It is derived from the word "Maktab" (مكتب), which translates to "office" or "school". Historically, the term was used to describe individuals involved in administration, trade, or education. This may explain why some families with the name Maktabi have backgrounds in carpet trading, academic professions, or journalism.
But there is also a Syrian family with the surname Maktabi traced back to the city of Aleppo in the north of Syria. Many years of genealogi research hasn't been able to establish a relationship between the "Iranien/Beirut" and the Syrian-family.
