The Macrander family is originally of German origin. The name Macrander is a Grecization (or Hellenization) of the name Langemann by the count's councillor Arnold Langemann (1566 - 1620) from Mengeringhausen, Waldeck-Frankenberg (Hesse). The city of Wetzlar (Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Hesse) has a prominent place in the family history. The German historian Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner Hahn refers to the Macrander family as a “Ratsfamilie” in his book “Altständisches Bürgertum zwischen Beharrung und Wandel - Wetzlar 1689-1870”.

The Meertens Institute (part of the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences) says:

In Germany, but also in Sweden, compositions on -ander < (Greek) anèr 'man' were popular, which made it possible to translate physical characteristics and job titles into Greek (Grecization). Some of them are also penetrated to the Netherlands and even now exists as surnames, for example Macrander, composed of Greek makros 'long' + ander < anèr 'man', see Johnannes Macrander, either Langemann (BBKL V 1893, p 542)[1]

Forefather of the Dutch branch

[edit]

Johann Gottfried (Fredrik) Macrander (6 March 1697 - ca. 1749) from Wetzlar came from Germany to the Netherlands as a corporal in the Prussian cavalry regiment "Prinz von Hessen-Philippsthal", which was in the service of the "Dutch States Army". Fredrik Macrander married Anna-Aleida Scheers from 's-Heerenberg and together they had five children. Fredrik died around 1749 from unknown causes. Anna-Aleida Scheers remarried on 16-11-1749 in 's-Heerenberg with Steven van Uem (Uum).
