List of communities using the Tridentine Mass

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Members of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, Rome.

Despite the Tridentine Mass being replaced by a new form of the Roman Rite Mass, some communities continued celebrating pre-conciliar rites or adopted them later. This includes priestly societies and religious institutes which use some pre-1970 edition of the Roman Missal or of a similar missal in communion with the Holy See. The following list includes those communities, as well as groups that are not in full communion with the Holy See,[A] with these being demarcated in two main sections. Most use a pre-1970 edition of the Roman Missal, usually the 1962 Missal, but some follow other Latin liturgical rites and thus celebrate not the Tridentine Mass but a form of liturgy permitted under the 1570 papal bull Quo primum. Many of these communities describe themselves as traditionalist Catholics.

The use of a pre-1970 Roman Missal has never been prohibited by the Catholic Church. Despite never being abrogated by the Church, it was rarely used post-Vatican II. To clarify the fact that the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite has never been abrogated and expand the liturgy's use, Pope Benedict XVI issued in 2007 a motu proprio titled Summorum Pontificum. In 2021, Pope Francis abrogated these more expansive permissions with his motu proprio Traditionis custodes, seeking to emphasize the celebration of the more commonly used Ordinary Form of the Mass.

This list makes a distinction between those communities using the Tridentine (or other traditional) Rite exclusively, and those which normally celebrate in both forms (Ordinary and Extraordinary) as part of their charism (classified here as bi-formal). It must be noted that those communities using exclusively the traditional rites, may rarely also celebrate or concelebrate Mass in the Ordinary Form, for example, as an external sign of ecclesial communion with a local bishop in the Chrism Mass, or in other particular occasions. However, as the Ordinary Form is not a normal and expected part of their charism, this sporadic celebrations do not turn them into bi-formal for the effects of this classification.

As of 2023, the largest priestly communities using the Tridentine Mass exclusively are the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP) with 386 priests, Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICKSP) with 147 priests and Institute of the Good Shepherd (IBP) with 62 priests.[B]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ The Catholic Church makes a distinction between full and partial communion: where full communion exists, there is but the one Church; partial communion, on the other hand, exists where some elements of Christian faith are held in common, but complete unity on essentials is lacking. Full communion involves completeness of "those bonds of communion – faith, sacraments and pastoral governance – that permit the Faithful to receive the life of grace within the Church."[1]
  2. ^ The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), with 707 priests, outnumbers them all, yet it is in a irregular canonical situation, lacking thus full communion with the Church's hierarchy.

  7. ^ Houses in: Argentina, Austria, Benin, Brazil, Cameroon, France, Italy, Nigeria, Philippines, Portugal, United States.
  8. ^ The friars started celebrating the Tridentine mass after Summorum Pontificum, at their founder's initiative. However, in 2013 the community was banned from celebrating it.
