Kamal Aljafari - also written Kamal Jafari (Arabic: كمال جعفري، كمال الجعفري ), born 1972 in Ramla, is a Palestinian filmmaker and visual artist. He is the most prolific and innovative Palestinian filmmaker working today. His work has been shown at film festivals such as the Berlinale, Locarno, Viennale and Rotterdam. and museums such as the MoMA and Tate Modern.[1][2] He graduated from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.[3]
Career
[edit]In 2004 he received the Friedrich Vordemberge Stipendium of the city of Cologne, 2005 Stipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds, 2005-2006 Imhoff-Stiftung Studio Stipendium at the Kölnischer Kunstverein,[4] and an award from the Sundance Documentary Fund in 2007.[4] In 2009, he was a featured artist at the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film seminar in New York.[5] Through 2009-2010 he was the Benjamin White Whitney fellow at Harvard University.[6]
He has held teaching positions at The New School in New York. 2011–2013 and at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin.[7] He was awarded a Film Study Center-Radcliffe Fellowship at Harvard University[8] and was fellow of the Camargo Foundation in Cassis.[8]
In 2021 he was jury member for Leopard of tomorrow section of 74th Locarno Film Festival, and for Burning Lights Competition of Visions du Réel, Nyon.[9] In 2021 Olhar de Cinema – Curitiba International Film Festival in Brazil devoted its Focus Section on the work of Kamal Aljafari.[10] Paradiso, XXXI, 108 was premiered in 2022 at the 75th Locarno Film Festival.[11] His installationThe camera of the Dispossessed was shown at the 35th São Paulo Art Biennial in 2023.[3]
A Fidai Film, a feature film investigating the looting of Palestinian films in Beirut in 1982 by Israeli forces, was premiered at Visions du Reel and won best film award Burning lights competition 2024.[12] It has won over 10 awards since then, two awards at FIDMarseille International Film Festival GNCR/CINÉ+ DISTRIBUTION SUPPORT PRIZE - RENAUD VICTOR PRIZE 2024.[13]
In 2024 the short UNDR received the Best EXiS Award at the Experimental Film & Video Festival in Seoul.[14]
