Josh Stein is an American venture capitalist and businessman who is a managing partner at Threshold Ventures (formed out of Draper Fisher Jurvetson).[1]
Stein held or holds board responsibilities at a number of startup companies. As of 2020[update], this included the Box (company), Chartbeat, LaunchDarkley, LendKey, Lumity, and Talkdesk. He led Box’s first round of institutional investment.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] He is also an investor in AngelList, Doximity, Front, Loftium, Periscope Data acquired by Sisense, and Rippling.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15]
He was featured in the Forbes Midas List in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in recognition of his accomplishments as an investor.[16] He was also the recipient of the 2015 Deloitte Fast 500 Venture Capitalist of the Year award.[17][18]
Early life and education
[edit]Stein earned an M.B.A from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and his B.A. from Dartmouth College.[19]
Career
[edit]Prior to joining DFJ, Stein was a co-founder, director and chief strategy officer for ViaFone, a DFJ-backed startup that created wireless enterprise applications. Stein previously held positions in product management at Microsoft and NetObjects, and was a management consultant in the San Francisco office of the Boston Consulting Group.[20]
Stein is a graduate of the Kauffman Fellows Program.[21][22]
Draper Fisher Jurvetson
[edit]Stein joined Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ) in 2004.[22] His previous investments include Redfin,[23] Twilio,[24] SugarCRM,[25] Swell (acquired by Apple),[26] Eventful (acquired by CBS Local),[27] GoodGuide (acquired by UL),[28] iList (acquired by IGN/News Corp),[citation needed] Polaris Wireless (strategic recapitalization),[29] Yammer (acquired by Microsoft),[30] and Yardbarker (acquired by Fox Sports Interactive).
Personal
[edit]He serves on the board of trustees of the Crystal Springs Uplands School.[31] and the Stanford GSB Trust.[1]
