Jeff Firewalker Schmitt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jefferey D Schmitt (Jeff Firewalker Schmitt) is an American scientist, educator, folk healer, ceremonialist, and musician.[1][2][3][4] His career spans over forty years in the fields of medical research, molecular biophysics, education, native healing and music.[1][3][5] His work attempts to bridge the understanding between native mysticism and contemporary Western thought and science.[6]

Early life and work

[edit]

Jeff Schmitt was admitted to college early and published his first peer-reviewed article shortly thereafter.[7] He conducted research in cellular signal transduction for over a decade in the laboratory of Robert Wykle at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.[8][9] Beginning in 1994, Schmitt shifted his focus to the computational modeling of biological systems, an area that became a central part of his later scientific work.[10][11]

In addition to his academic pursuits, Schmitt was engaged in musical performance and writing [12]

Education and academic career

[edit]

Jeff Schmitt attended Wake Forest University where he was awarded a BS in Chemistry.[13] This was followed by a joint-university graduate study at the University of Bath and Oxford University where he obtained a doctorate in Molecular Biophysics. He held full professorships at the Wake Forest University's School of Medicine in Biochemistry, Physiology-Pharmacology and was a fellow of the NIH Translational Sciences Institute.[14] He also served as Research Director of Research at Wake Forest University's School of Medicine's Center for Integrative Medicine.[14]

Business and research career

[edit]

Schmitt has served as an educator, scientist, and inventor; he has also been an innovation and entrepreneurism coach.[1][2][15] He has served in several organizations, including Eagle Condor Council (founder), Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Bent Creek Institute of the University of North Carolina as their founding Scientific Director, Targacept, Inc. as a co-founder, Sanesco Health Inc. as their Chief Scientific Officer, and Illumivu/Cardiogram, Inc. as their Chief Data Scientist.[16][15]

Music: Saint Disruption and the Saint Disruption Podcast

[edit]

Schmitt is the co-founder of Saint Disruption, a musical collective done in collaboration with John Medeski, a jazz artist. The initiative is a blend of music, visual arts, and poetry.[17] The group has released several albums with Rose in the Oblivion as the debut album that is based on social and community issues.
