Isabelle Boemeke, also known as Isodope, is a Brazilian fashion model and social media personality. She is known for her TikTok videos, in which she promotes the benefits of nuclear electricity and its role in solving climate change.
Early life
[edit]She was raised in a small town in Brazil and attended a Catholic high school.[1] Boemeke began working as a fashion model at the age of 17.[2] After moving to the United States for her modeling career, she read Richard Dawkins’ The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution, Frans de Waal's Our Inner Ape, and David Deutsch's The Beginning of Infinity, which sparked her interest in science.[2][1]
Career
[edit]In 2016, Boemeke first learned about the benefits of nuclear generated electricity from a tweet by Carolyn Porco about molten salt thorium reactors.[2][3][4][5]
The 2019 Australian bushfire and Amazon rainforest wildfires motivated Boemeke to use her platform to address climate change.[2][3] She believed that despite its controversial reputation in the media, nuclear generated electricity is necessary to solve climate change.[5][6]
Boemeke began incorporating climate and energy information into her modeling shoots in 2020.[4]
In February 2020, she created her social media account, Isodope, and began writing, producing, and editing videos that promoted facts about nuclear generated electricity.[5][7] Inspired by Lil Miquela, she took visual cues from vaporwave and mashed the aesthetic with contemporary social media tropes.[7]
Activism
[edit]In December 2021, she organized protests against the closure of the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in San Luis Obispo County, California, arguing that the state would struggle to reduce carbon emissions without it.[8][9] Subsequently, the plant closure has been delayed until 2030.[4][10]
Time magazine described her as a "Next Generation Leader" in 2022.[4]
