The Instituto Geográfico Militar (IGM; Military Geographic Institute in English) is an agency under the authority of the Chilean Army, serving as the official, technical, and permanent government body responsible for geographic and cartographic matters in Chile.

History

[edit]

The IGM was founded in 1881 as the Army's Geographic Service, alongside the establishment of the Army General Staff.[3] Over the years, the service adopted various names (such as "Geographic Office" and "Cartographic Section and Survey Department") until reaching its current institutional status on 29 August 1922 through Decree No. 1664.[3]

Cartographic and surveying work expanded significantly during those years, and on 30 July 1930,[3] through DFL No. 2,090,[4] it was officially designated as the State authority in charge of producing maps and surveying the national territory.[3]

That same year, the terrestrial surveying system was replaced by aerial photogrammetry, significantly improving cartographic development. In 1946, the IGM signed a cooperation agreement in this field with the Inter-American Geodetic Survey of the United States cartographic agency.[citation needed]

It also publishes the Geografía de Chile series in several volumes, recognized as one of the most important geographical works in the country. Notable contributors include Reinaldo Börgel, Víctor Quintanilla, Pilar Cereceda, Dionisio Vio, and Hans Niemeyer, among others.[citation needed]
