~19,000 (2024)

Indians in Bangladesh are citizens of India who reside in Bangladesh. The presence and number of Indian nationals in Bangladesh have been subjects of discussion and, at times, controversy.

In 2009, a column published in The Financial Express, a Bangladesh-based newspaper, reported an unsubstantiated claim that as many as 500,000 Indians were staying illegally in Bangladesh. [1]

Remittance

[edit]

Official data regarding remittances from Bangladesh to India indicates a relatively modest outflow of funds. According to figures from the Bangladesh Bank, the annual remittances sent from Bangladesh to India typically range between $50 million and $60 million USD.

This figure contrasts sharply with claims circulating within some Bangladeshi nationalist circles, which often allege that billions of dollars are remitted annually from Bangladesh to India. These claims are not supported by official statistics from either Bangladesh or India.[2]

Students

[edit]

According to Ministry of External Affairs of India in 2024, there were about 9,000 Indian students studying in Bangladesh.[3][4]
