Hangman (novel)

Hangman is a 2023 debut novel by writer Maya Binyam. It was published by Macmillan.[1] The novel is a surreal story about an exile returning home to Sub-Saharan Africa to visit his sick brother. It explores the themes of empathy, foreign aid, social responsibility, hospitality, and injustice.[2]
Reception
[edit]For Hangman, Binyam received the National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 Award,[3] the Bard Fiction Prize,[4] the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award,[5] the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction longlist,[6][7] and the Dublin Literary Award.[8] The novel was reviewed by The New York Times,[9] The New Yorker,[10] and The Guardian.[11]
