Summary

Description
English: In the last decade of the 20th century, Ebon Fisher's experimental theater company, Nerve Circle explored living confluxes of people, media, and the surrounding environment. Fisher developed an iconography for these events that reflected their flows of bodies, information and other living systems. His ethics network symbols, Zoacodes emerged out of these diagrams. The Confluxes took place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn largely in the 1990s, contributing to the Brooklyn Immersionist culture movement that helped to revive the district. The biomorphic nature of the conflux diagrams (and later the Zoacodes) was intended to appeal to living recipients of the forms and contribute to an extended biological system that moves from street to media to organic minds and back again. Much of this interdisciplinary work was informed by Fisher’s holistic Quaker culture which valued opening one’s mind to nature, and the research he did on emergent information systems at MIT as a student and an adjunct professor at MIT’s Media Lab in the 1980s. Although they have entered museums and art history books, Nerve Circle’s confluxes and media rituals lend themselves to a post-art, and post Anthropocene culture of vital systems cultivation.
