Split-liver and pancreatic transplant
[edit]In 2024, a team of surgeons led by Dr. Dar successfully performed Pakistan’s first split liver transplant and the country's first pancreatic transplant at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI&RC) in Lahore. The procedures were made possible by a liver donated by a young man who had been declared brain dead at a hospital in Rawalpindi. His liver was divided into two parts and transplanted into an adult and a child suffering from liver failure. The donor’s pancreas was also transplanted into a patient with Type 1 diabetes, marking the first pancreatic transplant in the history of Pakistan.[9][10][11][12]
The donor, Uzair Bin Yasin, had previously expressed his wish to donate all viable organs, including his liver, pancreas, kidneys, and corneas. His donated organs saved the lives of seven people across Rawalpindi and Lahore. Both of his corneas were donated to Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, where they were transplanted into two patients suffering from blindness. Both of his kidneys were also successfully transplanted into two separate patients suffering from renal failure at a private hospital in Rawalpindi.[9][10][11][12]
