Enrique Proper Chediak ASC (born June 30, 1967) is an Ecuadorian cinematographer, who works principally in the United States.[1][2] He was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Danny Boyle's 127 Hours (2010).

His other film credits include Hurricane Streets (1997), The Faculty (1998), Boiler Room (2001), 28 Weeks Later (2007), Charlie St. Cloud (2010), The Maze Runner (2014), Deepwater Horizon (2016), Bumblebee (2018), and A Minecraft Movie (2025).

Early life and education

[edit]

Chediak was born in Quito, Ecuador. He studied communication science in Santiago de Chile and photography in Madrid before studying film at New York University[3] from 1992 to 1996.

Career

[edit]

His first film as cinematographer was American Southern—released in 1995 and directed by John Joshua Clayton. He then shot the independent crime drama Hurricane Streets, which won him Best Cinematography at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival.

Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, he worked on other indie films like The Faculty (1998, Robert Rodriguez), Boiler Room (2000, Ben Younger), The Safety of Objects (2001, Rose Troche), Brown Sugar (2002, Rick Famuyiwa), and A Home at the End of the World (2004, Michael Mayer). He shot his first film in his native Ecuador, the thriller Crónicas, in 2004.

In 2007, he shot the horror film 28 Weeks Later. His work impressed executive producer Danny Boyle, who hired him to shoot his film 127 Hours (2010), collaborating with his usual cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle. The two earned multiple accolades, including a British Academy Film Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

In 2014, Chediak re-teamed with Danny Boyle for the TV series Babylon.

In 2018, Chediak shot the Transformers reboot Bumblebee (2018). He then shot its follow up Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023).

In 2025, Chediak shot A Minecraft Movie.
