Yoohei Kawakami (/ˈjoʊˌheɪ/ /ˌkɑwɑˈkɑmi/; Japanese: 川上 洋平, Hepburn: Kawakami Yōhei, born June 22, 1982) is a Japanese musician, lyricist, composer, and actor, best known as the vocalist and guitarist of the rock band [Alexandros].

Early life

[edit]

Career

[edit]
  • After graduating from university in March 2007, Kawakami worked as a sales representative for a foreign manufacturing company. Despite his day job, he continued pursuing music and eventually left the company in 2010 to focus on his band.[3]
  • Before his official debut, he supported himself by working part-time in telemarketing while continuing his musical activities.
  • In 2017, Kawakami expanded his career into acting, making his film debut with a cameo in Closest Love to Heaven (Kyō no Kira-kun). He later appeared in various television dramas, such as Date My Daughter! (Uchi no Musume wa, Kareshi ga Dekinai!!), Hold My Hand at Twilight (Yūgure ni, Te wo Tsunagu) and Private Banker (Puraibēto Bankā).

Personal life

[edit]
  • Kawakami is 181 cm (5'11") tall,[4] and has blood type A.[5]
  • He is known for his love of films and sets an annual goal to watch 200 movies. This passion for cinema led him to write an annual column for a magazine, where he shared his reviews and rankings of the films he watched until 2017.[Note 1]
  • He is a pet owner, with two cats named "Soy" and "Latte". Previously, he had a cat named "Milk", whose passing in 2016 at the age of 23 was mourned by fans.
  • He has held a driver's license since being a student, showcased in music videos such as "For Freedom". After forgetting to renew it, he re-acquired the license in 2020.
  • He abstains from alcohol, smoking, and gambling.[6][7][8]

Musical influences

[edit]

Kawakami cites the British rock band Oasis and its guitarist Noel Gallagher as significant influences on his musical style. The band's former name, [Champagne], was taken from the Oasis song "Champagne Supernova". Kawakami also frequently uses a Union Jack guitar, a signature model by Noel Gallagher, during live performances.

Equipment used

[edit]

Only the main equipment is listed.

Electric guitars

[edit]

This is his current main guitar, introduced during the recording of “Namida ga Koboresou” and used in most live performances since. It also appears in music videos like “Kick & Spin” and “Moon Song”. The pickup selector is taped in place.

Purchased in 2013, this guitar is now used as a secondary guitar during live performances. However, if the 1965 Jazzmaster encounters issues, this guitar serves as the main one. It appears in music videos such as “Adventure” and “Famous Day”.

Purchased in 2009 when his indie debut was confirmed, this guitar was used as the main guitar for most of [Champagne]’s activities. It continues to appear in some recordings and in the music video for “Feel like” after the band’s name changed to [Alexandros].

Acquired during the production of "Girl A" in 2015. It appeared in the “Arpeggio” music video and is now used for live performances with down-tuning.

This is Noel Gallagher’s signature model, which Kawakami greatly admires. It was first used during the 2016 tour “We Come In Peace” and is frequently used in solo live-stream performances.

Acoustic guitars

[edit]

This is his main acoustic guitar for live performances as of 2022, purchased in 2015. It was used in the "Wataridori" music video.

  • Gibson HP665 SB

Another main acoustic guitar used for live performances, alongside the Martin 000-28. It has a richer sound than the Martin, and is often used for slower ballads.

This acoustic guitar was introduced around 2012, originally borrowed from Hiroyuki Isobe. It appeared in the "Waitress, Waitress!" music video. Now retired from live and recording use, it is primarily used for composing at home.

  • SAVAGE Studio Glas 30

The most frequently used amplifier during live performances in the [Champagne] era. It is no longer available in Japan.

One of the main amplifiers currently used.

  • Fender BASSMAN

The other current main amplifier, used for clean sounds.

Used during the recording of "Wataridori" in 2015. He liked the sound of the studio's Supro amp and later bought a reissue model the following year.
