Yair Dovrat (Hebrew: יאיר דברת) is an Israeli-born poet, essayist, and technology entrepreneur. He is the founder and former CEO of Zaraz, a web performance and security company acquired by Cloudflare in 2021.[1][2] He is the author of the poetry collection מלאך ראשון (First Angel)[3] and has published poems, essays and literary critiques in Haaretz,[4][5][6][7][8][9] Ho!,[10][11][12][13] Ynet,[14] Moznaim[15], and HaMussach[16]. Dovrat is also known for his political activism, particularly his opposition to the Israeli occupation and his advocacy for Palestinian rights[17]. He currently resides in Brussels, Belgium[18].

Early life and education

[edit]

Dovrat was born in Zikhron Ya'akov, Israel, in 1990, and grew up in Binyamina.[19] At an early age, he was influenced by his aunt, Ronit Dovrat, a painter and peace activist.[20][21][22] He briefly attended Tel Aviv University, studying Classics, before leaving to pursue self-directed learning. He developed an interest in both literature and technology, eventually becoming an established figure in both fields.[23][24]

Literary Career

[edit]

Dovrat's poetry collection מלאך ראשון (First Angel) was published by Hakibbutz Hameuchad in 2017 and edited by Dory Manor[3]. The collection is known for its introspective and philosophical depth, engaging with themes of identity, exile, memory, and sensory experience. It received critical acclaim in publications such as Haaretz,[25] Yediot Aharonot,[26] Iton 77[27], and HaMussach[28].

In addition to poetry, Dovrat is an essayist and literary critic, publishing analyses on literature, art, and politics in Haaretz[29], HaMussach,[16] and Moznaim.[15] He also translated Allen Ginsberg's poem The Green Automobile[30] into Hebrew, published in the LGBTQ poetry anthology Nifla'ata[31][32] (2015) and in Haaretz.[33]

Technology and Entrepreneurship

[edit]

Dovrat led Proverb, an award-winning project in the Europeana Space competition,[34] using interactive technology to engage with cultural heritage[35][36].

In 2019, he co-founded Zaraz, a startup optimizing third-party script execution for better web performance, security, and privacy.[37] The company joined Y Combinator's Winter 2020 batch[38][39][40][41] and was acquired by Cloudflare in December 2021,[42][43][44] marking Cloudflare's first purchase of a company fully built on its Workers platform.[45][46] At Cloudflare, Dovrat worked as a Product Manager and Software Developer, focusing on privacy features[47][48][49] and server-side script execution.[50][51]

Political Views and Activism

[edit]

Dovrat has consistently opposed the Israeli occupation and has publicly criticized Israeli policies toward Palestinians, signing public petitions advocating for peace, human rights, and opposing racism.[17][52] He has been involved in Our Generation Speaks,[53] an Israeli-Palestinian entrepreneurial network fostering collaboration through innovation and business. In a 2023 interview with TheMarker, Dovrat cited his political stance as a primary reason for relocating to Brussels, Belgium.[18]

Personal Life

[edit]

Dovrat is married to Guéva Jean Seibert, a dancer and choreographer.[18] The couple resides in Brussels, Belgium.[18]
