UNRULY Collective is an interdisciplinary arts collective and community space based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City. Founded in 2015 by artist Hillary Huntington,[1] the collective serves as a gallery, performance venue, creative studio, and artist residency.[2]
Mission
[edit]UNRULY Collective provides an accessible, imaginative environment promoting growth and collaboration across all artistic fields. Our events are inviting and inspiring, open to all walks of life to indulge in the creation and consumption of art with no judgment or restrictions. UNRULY strives to continuously create opportunities for artists and patrons to thrive, develop, and explore creativity through community and collaboration. Founder Hillary Huntington-Mẽgroz said about her motivation to create UNRULY "I wanted to have a place where I can create, and also other artists can come and create, and show their work," she told Bushwick Daily. "It's hard to get into a gallery if you're not an established artists, and galleries in general just felt very impersonal to me, especially in the Lower East Side."[3]
Programming
[edit]UNRULY Collective offers a variety of community-based art programming, including:
- UNRULY Craft Club, a monthly DIY craft event with free materials and collaborative projects.
- Open Mic Nights, featuring poetry, music, and comedy from local performers.
- Live music events, spotlighting underground and emerging musicians, with shows multiple times a week.[4]
- Art exhibitions, showcasing both local and international artists.
Recognition
[edit]The collective has received several honors and grants for its work in arts and culture:
- 2022 – Best Innovation by Communitas America
- 2022 – Citizens of New York Grant
- 2021 – NYC Artist Corps Grant
- 2021 – NYC Open Culture Grant
