Thomas P. Monath is an American physician, virologist and vaccine developer. He is currently the chief scientific office of Crozet BioPharma and has held leadership positions in US Government agencies.[1][2] He is known for his decades of contributions to the advancement of vaccine research resulting in the development of several vaccines.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Monath received his undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Harvard and trained in internal medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston. From 1973 to 1988, Monath was the director of the Division of Vector-Borne Viral Diseases, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Fort Collins, Colorado, and from 1989 to 1992 chief of the Virology Division, United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).[4]
Career
[edit]In 1992, Monath retired from the US Army as a Colonel. From 1992 to 2006, Monath was chief scientific officer and a director of Acambis where he led the development of ACAM2000 and the Japanese encephalitis vaccine. From 2006 to 2014, Monath was chief medical officer of biotechnology companies Hookipa Pharma, Juvaris BioTherapeutics, Xcellerex. In 2014, he served as the chief scientific and chief operating officer of BioProtection Systems, the infectious disease subsidiary of NewLink Genetics where he led the development of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine.[5] In 2017, Monath formed Crozet BioPharma, where he leads a team working on vaccines. He is on the board of Juvaris Inc., US Biologics Inc, and Sentinext Plc and on the scientific advisory board of SutroVax Inc. and GeoVax Inc.[6][7][8] Monath was a Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. A leader in the “One Health” movement, Monath served on the American Veterinary Medical Association's “One Health” Task Force and also subsequently on the USA One Health Commission. He also served on the National Vaccines Advisory Committee, and on multiple World Health Organization expert committees.[9][7]
