The Third Battle of Tarain was fought in January 1216 between Iltutmish, the Mamluk king of the Delhi Sultanate, and Taj al-Din Yildiz, a former Ghurid general. Iltutmish defeated and captured Yildiz.

Iltutmish was Qutubuddin Aibak's son-in-law and slave. He ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1211 to 1236. Iltutmish completed the construction of Qutub Minar, which Aibak started. Iltutmish made Delhi the capital of the Delhi Sultanate instead of Lahore.
