The Ghost~Pop Tape (stylized in all caps) is the fifth mixtape by American rapper Devon Hendryx. It was released officially on September 3, 2013 on Devon's website, and later made available on his Bandcamp page on October 22, 2013.[1].
Background and recording
[edit]As a result of general lack of success of his music and various personal factors, JPEGMAFIA went into a depressive episode for the span of several years. However, he continued to make music in this time, even able to collaborate with other artists. Work on this project started sometime in 2012 with one of the earliest songs recorded for this album, "ODB", was recorded live on May 17, 2012[2].
Release and promotion
[edit]The mixtape originally released as a movie on August 12, 2013 as "1989年10月22日 GenY⁵" on Vimeo & later XVideos, containing early versions and snippets of songs from the mixtape & songs from both "JoeChillWorld" & "The Rockwood Escape Plan" respectively[3]
The mixtape was released on September 3, 2013 as "GenY⁵" on Devon's "geny89.com" website and later released officially on October 22, 2013 as "Ghost~Pop OST" (stylized in all caps). This album would get a few more revisions in December 2013 and January 2014, until March 2014 where the album would be revised three times in the span of two days. The latter of these updates is referred to as the "Ben Yuddha" version, named after an alias that Devon went by for a short period of time[4]. This lost version would contains a completely different version of the album, released only as separate singles.
On December 31, 2019, Devon, now going by JPEGMafia at this point, would re-release this project with included bonus tracks. Later, on October 23, 2023, Peggy would release a remastered version of the project with completely new mixing.
