Thar Htay (born 1958) is the current Chief Justice of the Union of Myanmar.[1]He was appointed by the State Administration Council on 3 August 2023,during a nationwide state of emergency.He is the second Chief Justice of the Union to be appointed under the 2008 Constitution.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Thar Htay is married.His older brother is Tha Aye ,a former member of the State Peace and Development Council and former Chief Minister of Sagaing Region Government.
Employee life
[edit]After graduating from the Law School, he joined the Tatmadaw (Army) General Training School.He then served in the Office of the Attorney General for over 24 years,rising to the rank of Colonel.He retired from the Office of the Attorney General with the rank of Colonel in 2010 during the State Peace and Development Council and was appointed as a member of the Union Election Commission.He served in that capacity until 29 March 2011.On 30 March 2011,he was nominated by the Union Parliament to be a Supreme Court of Myanmar.[3]He served in that capacity from 30 March 2011,when the military took power,until 13 March 2022.[4]He was appointed as the President of the Constitutional Tribunal of Myanmar on 14 March 2022.[5]
Chief Justice's duties
[edit]After serving as the President of the Constitutional Court until 3 August 2023, the following day,the State Executive Council appointed him as the Chief Justice of the Union.
