Aung Zaw Thein (Burmese: အောင်ဇော်သိန်း;born 1957) is the sixth President of the Constitutional Court.[1] A former military officer, he also served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Myanmar.
Education
[edit]He passed a BA (Law) from Yangon University and an LL.B (Rangoon University).[citation needed]
Career
[edit]After graduating from the Law School, he joined the military through the Military Academy.He then served in the Office of Tatmadaw.He rose to the rank of Colonel and served as Assistant Tatmadaw in that office.He then moved to the Contracts and Projects Division, Myanmar Economic Corporation,where he was appointed Deputy General Manager.[2]
Become Judge
[edit]On 22 February 2011,President Thein Sein proposed his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of Myanmar.The Pyidaungsu Hluttaw approved the appointment without objection,and he became a judge of the Supreme Court of Myanmar on 30 March 2011.He served in that capacity from 2021 until 3 August 2023,following the military coup.[3]During his tenure as a Supreme Court judge,he was a key figure in rejecting the request to dismiss the corruption charges against several NLD ministers,including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.[4] On 3 August 2023,the State Administration Council appointed him as the President of the Constitutional Tribunal.
