Taff Groves is a Welsh former soldier who served in the Special Air Service(SAS) and was involved in civilian rescue efforts during the Westgate shopping mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya in 2013. For his actions, he is listed among notable SAS personnel in the List of former Special Air Service personnel.
Early life and military career
[edit]Taff Groves was born in Cardiff, Wales, and raised in the Ely and Cathays districts. At age 19, he enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Wales. Groves joined the Special Air Service(SAS) after passing the United Kingdom Special Forces Selection, serving in 22 SAS Regiment. He later served in L Detachment of the SAS Reserves, with his military career spanning 30 years in regular service and 17 years in the reserves.[1]
Westgate mall attack
[edit]
On 21 September 2013, while visiting Nairobi for a meeting as a global security advisor for a logistic firm, Groves responded to the Westgate shopping mall attack by Al-Shabaab militants.[2] With his colleague, an ex-Irish Ranger, Lorcan Byrne, both unarmed, he assisted in civilian evacuations[3] during the four-day siege that resulted in 67 deaths and approximately 200 injured.[4][5]
Media reports described Groves helping evacuate people from multiple locations within the mall including areas where a children's event was occurring as well as administering emergency first aid.[1][2] His actions were later featured in the documentary Terror at the Mall(2014).[6][1]
Personal life
[edit]Following his military career, Groves continued working as a security advisor.[1] He returned to Nairobi once at survivors' request.[5]
