The Sun Pavillion and Colonnade is a monument situated in Valley Gardens, Harrogate, England.[1] It is a grade II listed building in a neoclassical style with some art deco elements.[2] It is a popular venue for weddings.[3]
The Sun Pavilion and Colonnade were first commissioned in 1869. It was designed by borough surveyor Leonard Clarke, and wasn’t completed until 1933.[1] It was opened by noted medic Lord Horder of Ashford, filmed by British Pathé. [4]
In 1986, the site was in disrepair, and under consideration as the new site of a car park. A group of friends led by Anne Smith, including author James Herriot, David Bellamy, Geoffrey Smith and others, spent 12 years protesting the car park and restoring the site. It underwent a restoration starting in 1998 and was officially re-opened by Queen Elizabeth II.[5]
The site was awarded its grade II listed status in 2022 to mark the 20th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit. [4]
