Datuk Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Abdul Rahman (born 28 July 1958) or better known as Amy Search is a Malaysian musician, singer, songwriter and actress, best known as the lead vocalist as the founder and main leader of the group Search (band), Search (band) is the most influential Malaysian rock band in Malaysia and is Malaysia's number 1 rock band, Search (band), which has released more than 20 best-selling studio albums, dozens of best-selling songs and singles, and dozens of concerts that often sell out tickets. Apart from that, he is also active in the field of acting, among his acting films include Kembara Seniman Jalanan (1986) and Fenomena (1990).[1] His cousin, Amir Pearl or his full name Dato' Seri Mohd Amir Mohd Esa is a vocalist from Kumpulan Pearl which was popular with the hit song Aku Tak Bersalah in the early 90s.]]
Career
[edit]Initially, Datuk Amy worked as a piano tuner before becoming the lead singer and guitarist with two of his school friends to form the band The Detours Brothers in 1971-1973. Then Amy became the lead singer and rhythm guitarist to establish Soft White Eyes which was led by three people Umarul who was the lead guitarist of iklim (lead guitar), Dian P. Ramlee (bass guitar) and Yantzen (drums) in 1973. In 1978, Awang became the lead guitarist to join the Soft White Eyes group while Umarul was absorbed as the second guitarist and this group changed its name to Titanic band in 1979 and was buried in 1981 and revived in 1983. Amy and invited the two people, Nasir and Din to join the Flash group then they changed their name to establish the name Search (band) to replace Zainal as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist since 1981. When Zainal left Flash (Search), Datuk Amy became the lead singer and tambourine as the group leader and founder of the group while the two people Din as the rhythm guitarist and Nasir Daud as bass guitarist before he withdrew and continued his career as a solo singer.[2]
Search (band) also did not escape from experiencing a split. The most unacceptable thing for their loyal fans was Datuk Amy's withdrawal around 1996 from the Search Group, which disappointed many of their fans because at that time the Search Group had been established for more than 10 years in the local music industry and was among the longest-lasting rock groups in Malaysia. Datuk Amy decided to leave the Search Group and released her second solo album, Camouflage. Before Datuk Amy left Search, she also recorded her first solo album titled Magic.[3]
After several years of working solo, Datuk Amy and Search (band) decided to reunite. Following the success of Datuk Amy's reunion with Search, many artists who were previously in groups reunited with their original groups, such as Datuk Nash with Lefthanded, Yantzen Juniwan|Yantzen with Rusty Blade, Datuk Awie with Wings, Joey with Bumi Putra Rockers|Bumi Putra Rockers Group, Mustaffa Din|Mus with May (band), Syed Ismail Syed Ibrahim|Mael with XPDC, Isa Rahman with Handy Black, the late Saleem with iklim, Zarith Mega| Zarith with Mega ,Mohd Redzuan Aziz|Oney with Lipan Bara and many more.[4]
In 2008, Datuk Amy stole the attention of the Indonesian media by expressing his displeasure over the tendency of Malaysian radio stations to prioritize Indonesian songs. [5]
On March 30, 2020, he announced his resignation as Search's vocalist for the second time, citing vocal quality as the main reason.[6] He reportedly will not be involved in any of Search's concerts in the future.[7]
Acting career
[edit]Amy began her acting career in 1986 through the film Kembara Seniman Jalanan directed by Nasir Jani.[8]
In 2010, Amy starred in the musical performance Suatu Masa: Amy which is "not rock" at Istana Budaya from March 26 to 28.[9] The musical organised by Mentari Channel Network, which takes an hour and 45 minutes for each performance, is accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, with emotional monologues.[10]
Profile and vocal abilities
[edit]Classified as having a “Serak-serak Basah” voice, he is one of Malaysia’s best rock singers with the band Search who won the Best Vocal Performance in a Song category at the Music Industry Awards, Malaysia’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the United States.
Adjie Esa Poetra, an Indonesian vocal instructor, described her high raspy voice as "She (Amy Search) is very careful and never fails in producing tones and she can produce the most artistic and beautiful tones possible.... In any song, she can sing with ease but power in addition to having more than four octaves of various raspy vocals.
One of her most complicated songs to perform is "Tiada Lagi", a song from Mayangsari influenced by Japan where it requires Amy to play falsetto transitions and high raspy vocal tones and is rarely performed live.
Personal life
[edit]He first married Faridah, (1983-1985), and divorced then married Noorliza Abdul Latiff, (1990-1994). Once again Amy's marriage was hit by crisis and separated then Amy married Roslisa Ahmad, once again Amy was hit by trials in her marriage causing them to separate again until she met Norhasniza "Nourish" Hassan who is from Melaka and remained until now.[11] His marriage to Amy has given birth to 5 children in total, namely Nabila Huda (1984), Irisha Myra (1997), Alexander Zulkarnain (2004), Sania Samara (2005) and the youngest Qaqa At-Tameemi (2009). His wife, Nourish suffered a miscarriage when she was four months pregnant.[12]
He is a coffee and teh tarik enthusiast and has launched his own tea brand called Phewiiit!. Amy said: "Rock fans, get ready for my special Teh Tarik Phewiiit!. It's something I've always wanted to do, because I'm a coffee lover. From my early days as an aspiring musician, to a rock singer, coffee has never left my soul after a hard day's work".[13]
