Subjugation Operation in Southern Korea (Korean: 남한대토벌작전, Hanja: 南韓大討伐作戰) was a counterinsurgency operation and mass murder committed by Imperial Japanese Military. The operation was against Korean Righteous armies and civilians in southern region of Korean Empire.
Background
[edit]In a year of 1907 Emperor Gojong of Korea were abdicated by Japan, and Korean military forces were also disbanded in a result of Japan–Korea Treaty of 1907. This led to a countrywide resistance movement against Japan called Jeongmi Righteous Army Movement (Korean: 정미의병).[1]
Subjugation
[edit]In July 1907 Japanese 47th and 14th Infantry Regiments were sent to quell resistances of southern part of Korean Peninsula.[2] These two regiments have subjugated most of the resistant movements in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, and Chungcheong regions for 22 months. According to Chosun Bandit Subjugation Record (Korean: 조선폭도토벌지) published by Japan, 3,627 were killed in year 1907 and 11,562 were killed in 1908.[3]
By May 1909 most of the remaining righteous armies were pushed into Sobaek Mountains between Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions.[4] Japan rotated existing regiments to brigade-scale special expeditionary forces during mid 1909 and began subjugation operation against remaining partisans in southern Korea. Operation started in September 1909 and ended in October 1909. 420 were killed during the operation.[4]
Counterinsurgency operations of Japan had an aspect of a massacre. Exchange ratio between Korean partisans and Japanese Forces were 117 to 1. Most of the POWs were shot after enquiry. Towns and Temples were also burnt down by Japanese Forces for harboring the partisans.[2][5][3][6] After the end of the operation, most of the military resistance forces within Korean borders were destroyed. Therefore, survivors of the righteous armies moved to Manchuria and continued Korean Independence Movement.[1]
