Sifted is a British online news website focusing on technology start-ups and venture capitalism in Europe. It was launched in January 2019 by co-founders John Thornhill, innovation editor at the Financial Times and Caspar Woolley, an entrepreneur who previously co-founded taxi app Hailo.
The Financial Times signed a seven-year deal to be involved with Sifted upon launch, and initially owned a 25% stake in the company[1]. In 2021 the Financial Times' share was diluted to 14%, when private equity firm ScaleUp Capital paid £4 million for a 25% stake in the company[2]. The remaining 61% of the company is owned by numerous angel investors.
Since 2021, the company has held the annual Sifted Summit in London[3], bringing together start-up founders and investors from across Europe.
