Shubham Singh (born 9 September 1997) is an Indian industrialist recognized as one of Bihar's business leaders. As the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Oorja Distilleries Private Limited (BODPL), he led the development of Bihar's first ethanol plant under the state's Ethanol Production Promotion Policy of 2021, a milestone that has elevated his profile in the region's industrial sector.[1][2] Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Singh is the son of Dinesh Prasad Singh, a veteran Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), and Veena Devi, a Member of Parliament (MP) from Vaishali, whose political prominence has complemented his rise as an industrial pioneer.[3][4]
Early life and education
[edit]Shubham Singh was born on 9 September 1997 in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, to Dinesh Prasad Singh and Veena Devi, both notable political figures in Bihar. His father, a Janata Dal (United) MLC representing Muzaffarpur since the 1990s, reported assets of ₹15.7 crore in his election affidavit, while his mother, a Lok Janshakti Party MP from Vaishali, declared ₹11.56 crore, underscoring the family's influence.[3][4][5] Growing up in a politically engaged household, Singh attended Welham Boys' School in Dehradun for primary education and DPS R.K. Puram in New Delhi for high school, both prestigious institutions.[6]
He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi and later completed a Master’s in Public Policy at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, skills that have informed his approach to industrial development in Bihar.[7][8]
Career
[edit]
Singh established BODPL and took on the role of Chairman and Managing Director upon its incorporation on April 28, 2021, under the Registrar of Companies in Patna.[1] In August 2023, he oversaw the launch of Bihar’s first ethanol plant in Motipur, Muzaffarpur, a development hailed as a shift from the state’s agrarian roots to industrial growth.[1][9] Producing over 150 million liters annually, BODPL supplies ethanol to oil marketing companies such as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, contributing to India’s 20% ethanol blending goal by 2025.[10]
In June 2022, Singh negotiated a ₹118.71 crore (approximately $14.22 million USD) credit facility from the State Bank of India, enabling BODPL to employ over 1,200 workers by 2025.[10][11] His efforts to link Bihar’s agricultural base with industrial output have been credited with boosting local economies, particularly in Muzaffarpur, a region tied to his family’s legacy.[10][12] Singh has also announced plans to expand into biogas and extend BODPL’s operations to Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand by 2027.[10]
Recognition
[edit]
Singh has earned acclaim as a leading industrialist in Bihar, with local media highlighting his transformation of Muzaffarpur into an industrial hub.[13] *Dainik Jagran* has described him as “the face behind Bihar’s ethanol revolution,” praising his education and entrepreneurial vision.[14] BODPL’s inclusion in the Startup India initiative by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) reflects his broader impact.[1]
Personal life
[edit]Born and raised in Muzaffarpur, Singh comes from a politically prominent family. His father, Dinesh Prasad Singh, has served as an MLC for over 18 years, while his mother, Veena Devi, is a two-term MP from Vaishali.[3][4] Despite his notable background, Singh keeps his personal life private, directing focus toward his industrial achievements.[15]
