SMG4 (abbreviation of SuperMarioGlitchy4 and formerly known as Super Mario 64 Bloopers) is an Australian parody machinima web-series founded by Luke Lerdwichagul. It mainly focuses on parodies of Nintendo franchises or other works. It was first uploaded on the SMG4 (at the time known as Supermarioglitchy4) YouTube channel on May 7, 2011 with the episode "The Cake Is a Lie!".[1]

Series Summary

[edit]

SMG4 chronicles the adventures of the "SMG4 Crew", a dysfunctional group of friends going about on various misadventures, utilizing internet memes and running gags with greater (and often comical) results as it usually escalates into complete chaos.

Characters

[edit]

Main Characters

[edit]
  • SMG4: One of the main protagonists of the series who is also the titular protagonist. He is a partially amnesiac Super Meme Guardian who gets dragged into Mario's adventures.
  • Mario: One of the main protagonists of the series. He is an Italian-American plumber. He is also depicted as the dumb man of the channel. He and Luigi are typically presented as the comic reliefs of the channel.

Major supporting Characters

[edit]
  • Luigi: One of the two deuteragonists of the series. He is Mario's younger foster brother. He is often called gay by his brother and gets scared very easily. But nonetheless, from friendly ghosts to knocking into strangers' houses, he acts bravely when he needs to.
  • Meggy Spletzer: One of the two deuteragonists of the series and the main protagonist of Season 9. She is a former Inkling who is friends with Mario and the others. She likes action and adventure but doesn’t like anime. She's a complete failure at cooking. She was permanently transformed into a human upon being drained of her ink in "SMG4: Final Hours".
  • Fishy Boopkins: A jolly Spike and the son of Joe Boopkins that loves eating rocks and anime. His species is endangered.
  • Bob Bobowski: A Garo who constantly wants to be in SMG4's videos during Season 6. He is friends with the cast but more so Fishy Boopkins. He is the focus of Season 8's second story arc that centers on his career as a rapper, but it caused him to strain his relationship with his friends. He loses his fame and is able to make up with his friends during Season 8's conclusion.
  • SMG3: The current anti-heroic tritagonist of the series. He is a partially amnesiac Super Meme Guardian and the former arch-nemesis of SMG4 who becomes his rival after they first met. After he was banished to the Internet Graveyard by Susan Wojcicki, he became ruler of said realm. As of Season 11, he is a member of the gang.
  • Tari: A shy and quiet girl who's a pro in video games. She also loves rubber ducks, as she is frequently seen with one. She is also a cyborg who can manipulate the properties of video games.
  • Melony: A literal watermelon used to replace Meggy that was later transformed into a lazy human girl by Fierce Deity Mask and the late Axol's best friend/crush.
  • Saiko Bichitaru: A girl from Kevin's School who was mentally unstable due to her wanting attention. She eventually reformed in SMG4: Luigi's Lesson. She has since gradually grown to be good friends with most of the cast.
  • Shroomy: A mushroom boy scout and former demon hunter hailing from the Luncheon Kingdom. He is an innocent denizen but tends to suffer from PTSD and a sadistic mindset he obtained during his former life as a Demon Hunter.
  • Kaizo Koorumaniru: A demon who was a friend of Saiko. He was created by the fans in a live stream.

  • Waluigi: Wario's brother and taco vendor who was a major threat to the Mushroom Kingdom in his own arc based on a meme of not being in smash until being redeemed by SMG3. He would later do the same to Bob.

Style

[edit]

SMG4 is generally known for having a light-hearted, comedic tone, albeit occasional darker tones. The show is known for referencing pop culture, obsessively using memes and featuring adult jokes. During some episodes, especially during arcs, the tone severely darkens.

History

[edit]

SMG4 was founded as a web series in 2011, though the channel of the same name the web series is uploaded on was founded in 2009.

Upon SMG4's inauguration, videos almost had no original IP and had much lower production quality than that of nowadays. Most original SMG4 episodes consisted of Mario as the prominent character, among other Nintendo characters. The channel was originally named Supermarioglitchy4, and episodes were branded as Super Mario 64 Bloopers. Both were renamed as simply SMG4 in 2017. Two other prominent series other than SMG4 were featured on the SMG4 channel - R64 (originally known as Retarded64) and Guards N' Retards. These two series have since been discontinued and merged into the SMG4 series regarding YouTube's stricter policies and the word "retard".

In 2018, SMG4 began to transition to original IP. The first story arc in the series also occurred said year and added more storytelling aspects to the series. Over the past few years, SMG4 has switched to more original IP and much higher production quality. Multiple characters have been redesigned into an original IP.
