"Running Gun Blues" is a song by the English musician and singer-songwriter David Bowie from his third studio album The Man Who Sold the World.
Lyrics
[edit]The lyrics talk about gun-toting assassins and Vietnam War commentary,[3] specifically the Mỹ Lai massacre of 1968.[1]
Reception
[edit]Ned Raggett of AllMusic states that it "fuses the two impulses together as well as could be done, being both a showcase for his then-backing band " and that "The whole pace of the song is fairly blasé, a bit of hard rock crunch tempered in the mix that's steady enough but nowhere near as commanding as, say, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin would be (though doubtless that wasn't the intent)."[2] British magazine Far Out believes that the song is inspired by classical composer Tchaikovsky.[4]
Personnel
[edit]According to author Chris O'Leary:[1]
- David Bowie – lead vocal, 12-string acoustic guitar
- Mick Ronson – lead guitar, slide guitar, backing vocal
- Tony Visconti – bass, backing vocal
- Mick Woodmansey – drums, tambourine
- Ralph Mace – moog synthesizer
