Raphaël Pannier (born 1990) is a French jazz drummer, composer, and educator based in Paris. He is known for his collaborations with artists such as Miguel Zenón, Lee Ritenour, François Moutin, and Biréli Lagrène, as well as for cross-cultural projects exploring the intersection of jazz and traditional West African rhythms.

Early life and education

Pannier was born in 1990 in France and studied classical music and percussion near Paris. In 2010, he moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 2013. He then pursued a Master of Music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, graduating in 2017."Alumni Notes". Berklee College of Music. Retrieved 2025-08-01.

Career

From 2014 to 2020, Pannier lived in New York City, performing with various jazz artists including Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Steve Wilson, Marcos Valle, and Emil Afrasiyab.

In 2016, he won the First Prize in the international Six Strings Theory Competition, organized by guitarist Lee Ritenour and judged by musicians such as Dave Weckl and Simon Phillips. That same year, he toured and recorded with Ritenour in the United States and Japan. [1]

In 2019, Pannier recorded his debut album as a leader, Faune, featuring alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist François Moutin, and classical pianist Giorgi Mikadze. The album was co-produced by Zenón and released in September 2020 on the French Paradox label.[2][3]

Letter to a Friend

Pannier's second album, Letter to a Friend, was released in October 2023 following a grant from the French-American Cultural Exchange Foundation (FACE), administered by Villa Albertine and the French Ministry of Culture."Current Grantees". Jazz Magazine called the album "a milestone in the history of encounters between jazz and electro," and Le Monde published a feature describing the project and its innovative direction.

Recent projects

In May 2024, Pannier led a cross-cultural residency in Saint-Louis, Senegal, in partnership with the Saint-Louis Jazz Festival and the French Institute of Senegal. The project brought together a jazz quartet—including Yosvany Terry, Thomas Enhco, and François Moutin—with sabar percussionists led by master drummer Khadim Niang. The residency concluded with a public concert and a live recording.[4]

European activity

Since returning to France in 2020, Pannier has been based in Paris and performs throughout Europe. He is a member of the trios of Biréli Lagrène, Baptiste Trotignon, Thomas Enhco, Antonio Lizana, and Manel Fortià, among others.

Teaching

Pannier has been a faculty member at the American School of Modern Music in Paris since 2020.[5]

Recognition

Pannier was named "Top Jazz Drummer in France" by Jazz Magazine in both 2021 and 2023.
