Randwick High School is a co-educational public secondary school in Randwick, Sydney, Australia. Offically opened in 2025, the school amalgamated the former Randwick Boys High School and Randwick Girls' High School, aiming to meet local community preferences for a co-educational environment. The school is part of the NSW Department of Education's broader move towards providing more co-educational options across the state.[1]
History
[edit]The NSW Department of Education announced the formation of Randwick High School after extensive consultations in September 2023.[2]. Many parents and local stakeholders supported a co-educational model, seeing it as beneficial for educational and social development, with the merging of both high schools seeing both positive and negative opinions, with support arising from the lack of public co-educational schools in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, while oppositions argued over the loss of choice in single-sex education, primarily from students and parents of the former Randwick Girls.[3] This decision was finalised in 2024 where both schools would officialy merge into a singular co-educational high school in the following year.[4]
Campus and Facilities
[edit]Randwick High School’s campus features newly upgraded facilities through a $42 million government investment, set to be fully realized by 2027.[5] This includes cutting-edge classrooms, a gymnasium, science and technology laboratories, performing arts venues, and flexible learning spaces. Outdoor areas, including landscaped playgrounds, will provide a stimulating environment for student recreation and socialisation.
Academic and Extracurricular Programs
[edit]Randwick High School offers a broad curriculum that includes STEM, humanities, and creative arts subjects. Extracurricular opportunities will cover a wide range of activities in sports, arts, and academic clubs to support holistic student development. The school is dedicated to fostering both academic excellence and personal growth, encouraging students to realize their potential and pursue diverse post-secondary pathways.
Transition Process
[edit]The establishment of Randwick High School as a co-educational institution is supported by a transitional framework to assist students, staff, and families. In its opening, special provisions were made in place for Year 11 and Year 12 students, allowing them continuity in their previous studies and minimal disruption as they prepare for their Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations.[6] The NSW Department of Education is facilitating the transition by engaging the school community in shaping the school’s final name, uniform, and other cultural aspects.
