Rajiv Jha (Nepali: डा. राजीव झा) is a Nepalese neurosurgeon and medical educator. He is a professor of neurosurgery and a senior consultant at Bir Hospital, Kathmandu.

Early life and education

[edit]

Jha was born on 18 February 1972 in a village near the Nepal–India border. Due to the lack of local schools, he was homeschooled until Grade 3 and later enrolled at Janata Secondary School in Itahari. He completed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) from Saraswati Secondary School in Janakpur.[1]

He received his MD from Tver State Medical Academy in Russia in 2000. Upon returning to Nepal, he completed postgraduate medical training at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), earning both an MS in General Surgery and an M.Ch. in Neurosurgery.[1]

He also pursued advanced fellowships in Skull Base and Functional Neurosurgery at Medanta, India (2011), the University of Tübingen, Germany (2012), and the University of California, San Francisco (2013), supported by the WFNS and AANS fellowship programs.[1]

Medical career

[edit]

Jha began his neurosurgical practice at Bir Hospital under the mentorship of neurosurgeon Prof. Upendra Devkota. Over his career, he has performed more than 18,000 brain surgeries. He has also contributed to the introduction of advanced techniques in Nepal, including Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s disease.[2]

He is currently affiliated with:

  • Bir Hospital, Kathmandu – Professor and Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon. He is a full-time faculty member at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Nepal and Head of the Department, MCh Coordinator.[3]
  • Norvic International Hospital, Kathmandu[4]
  • National Neuro Spine Center Nepal[5]

Honors and recognition

[edit]

Jha has received several national and international honors for his medical contributions:

  • Nepal Vidyabhushan Medal (2023)[6]
  • Suprabal Janasewashree Medal (2022)[7]
  • National Science, Technology and Innovation Award (2022)[8]
  • WFNS Fellowship in Neurosurgery (2012), awarded by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies for advanced neurosurgical training.[9]
  • Awarded the **Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Edinburgh)** in 2022, becoming only the second Nepalese neurosurgeon after the late Dr. Upendra Devkota to receive this distinction. At the time, he had performed approximately 12,000 brain surgeries.[10]
  • Crockard International Fellowship Award (2013), conferred by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons recognizing excellence in neurosurgical practice.[11]
  • AASAN Ambassadorship Award (2013), presented in the USA for significant contributions to neurosurgery.[12]

Academic and public engagement

[edit]

As a faculty member and trainer at NAMS, Jha is involved in mentoring postgraduate neurosurgery students. He emphasizes hands-on surgical training and the importance of academic exchange in medical practice. His research contributions are indexed in professional platforms such as ResearchGate.[13]

He is also active in public health education, particularly on topics such as brain tumors and stroke awareness. In 2024, he discussed the state of brain tumor treatment in Nepal during a national interview.[14] He has appeared on platforms to address neurological complications post-COVID and curability of brain tumors.[15][16]

In 2024, Jha was involved in a government-supported initiative at Bir Hospital offering free brain tumor surgeries for underprivileged patients, scheduled through June 30.[17]

Jha is an active voice in public health messaging; on World Brain Tumor Day 2025 he emphasized early detection and age-related risk, noting that brain tumors are most commonly diagnosed in individuals aged 40–50 years.[18]
