Punjab Gramin Bank (PGB) is a Regional Rural Bank (RRB) in India, operating primarily in the state of Punjab. Established under the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976, it is sponsored by Punjab National Bank, a major public sector bank in India. The bank focuses on providing financial services to rural and semi-urban areas, contributing to the economic development of Punjab's rural population through various loan and deposit schemes.[1]
History
[edit]Punjab Gramin Bank was originally established on September 12, 2005, with its headquarters in Kapurthala, Punjab. On January 1, 2019, it underwent a significant transformation following a Government of India notification dated December 21, 2018, which amalgamated three erstwhile RRBs—Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank, and Sutlej Gramin Bank—into a single entity retaining the name "Punjab Gramin Bank." This consolidation aimed to enhance operational efficiency and expand the bank's reach across Punjab.[2] The amalgamated bank's head office remains in Kapurthala.
Operations
[edit]As of March 31, 2024, Punjab Gramin Bank operates 446 branches across all districts of Punjab, with 80.94% of its branches located in rural areas. The bank serves a customer base exceeding 3.9 million and has a total business volume surpassing ₹25,200 crore (approximately US$3 billion, based on exchange rates as of early 2025).[1] It maintains seven regional offices in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, Bathinda, and SAS Nagar (Mohali), ensuring effective administration and service delivery.[3]
The bank is a scheduled bank under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, and is authorized to conduct banking transactions as per the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. Its primary focus is on rural development, offering financial products tailored to agricultural and rural needs.[1]
Services
[edit]Punjab Gramin Bank provides a range of banking services, including:
- Retail Banking: Savings and current accounts, fixed deposits, and recurring deposits.
- Mobile Banking: Facilitates balance checks, account transactions, and payments via SMS and mobile applications.[4]
- Loans: Agricultural loans, personal loans, and microfinance options to support rural livelihoods.
- Digital Banking: Implements core banking solutions (CBS) and offers online services through its website and mobile platforms.
The bank emphasizes financial inclusion, aiming to uplift rural communities by providing accessible banking services to underserved populations.[2]
Organizational Structure
[edit]The bank is led by a chairman, with Sh. Sanjeev Kumar Dubey holding the position as of April 2025.[1] The head office oversees departments such as Human Resources, Credit, Information Technology, and Financial Inclusion, each managed by senior officials. Regional offices are headed by Regional Managers responsible for branch operations within their jurisdictions.

Significance
[edit]Punjab Gramin Bank plays a vital role in Punjab's rural economy by supporting agriculture, small-scale industries, and individual households. Its extensive branch network and sponsorship by Punjab National Bank strengthen its position as a key financial institution in the region. The bank's commitment to inclusive growth aligns with the broader objectives of India's Regional Rural Banks to bridge the urban-rural financial divide.[2]
