Draft:Prānt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A prānt (Hindustani: प्रांत, "province") also known as pradesh, was the first-level administrative division of the Maratha Empire. It was formed along with the formation of the empire in 1764, when Shivaji I was coronated as the first Chhatrapati of India, part of Deccan wars between Mughals and Marathas over the control of Deccan. The Vijaypur Prānt was the first ever prānt to be formed. It was formed over the former Bijapur Sultanate with the city of Vijayapura as its capital.
