From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parramatta Baptist Church is a Congregation and [[church building in the suburb of Northmead, New South Wales, north of The city of Parramatta .[1]

It is a member of the Australian Baptist Union, and holds a generally broad churchman ship, though one that is generally within the evangelical tradition. The congregation numbers around four hundred people.

History

[edit]

The church was planted in 1851 by the Baptist Church in Bathurst Street, Sydney when a need was realized to provide a Baptist presence in the second city of the colony of New South Wales.[2] the congregation met in a small brick chapel until 1978 when it was obvious to the congregation that the congregation was dwindling and a decision was made [3] to move the church from Parramatta to the residential suburb of Northmead located four Kilometers to the north.

This decision was controversial and decisive but eventually a move was made to relocate to the site of a dilapidated soft drink factory in Northmead. The church began operation on this site in 1980. The old factory site has required considerable environmental remediation over the years.

In 2023 the church was granted planning approval for a significant Contruction to the church building.
