OpenHub is a multidisciplinary innovation and research hub founded in 2014 in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, by UCLouvain professors Benoît Macq and Benoît Raucent. It serves as a physical and institutional bridge between academic research, industrial needs, and student-led innovation.
Overview
[edit]OpenHub provides infrastructure and collaborative services to researchers, students, startups, and corporate partners. It offers specialized labs such as:
- A Fab Lab Pro for advanced prototyping
- An xR Lab for augmented/virtual reality experimentation
- Co-working spaces and high-tech classrooms
- Programs for student-industry collaboration and startup acceleration
Founding and Mission
[edit]OpenHub was co-founded by professors Benoît Macq and Benoît Raucent in response to the need for more integrated university-industry interfaces. It is located within UCLouvain’s science and engineering ecosystem and was supported by regional innovation programs such as WALINNOV.
Role in Scientific Research

- Providing computational infrastructure and test environments
- Hosting prototype development and system validation
- Co-authoring and enabling peer-reviewed publications
Its contributions include support for:
- The development of lightweight AI models for video object detection through Stream-Based Active Distillation[1]
- Research in augmented reality and human-agent interaction using holonic multi-agent systems[2]
- Master’s theses involving machine learning and IoT, with infrastructure and expert mentoring[3]
- Studies on the prototyping space and innovation methodologies in FabLabs[4]
- AI-assisted life-monitoring tools for the elderly, in collaboration with MedReSyst[5]
Community and Network
[edit]OpenHub is a member of the Creative Hubs Network and actively collaborates with:
- Louvain Bionics
- ICTEAM and PiLAB research institutes
- Student entrepreneurship programs like Alumnior and Student Labs
- Industry and public-sector partners
