For other uses, see Muffin top (disambiguation).

A group of muffins, with the tops shown prominently

A muffin top is an individually portioned product of bread, referring to the top of an individually sold American quickbread muffin. Muffin tops are often sold in cafés and/or other restaurants selling quick, easy-to-make food.[1] Muffin tops are distinguishable from other similar bread products by their crisp browned crust that is singed around the edges.[2]

A muffin top is traditionally sweet and can come in a variety of flavours, although amongst the most common are plain, chocolate chip, and blueberry, although many are sold throughout the world.

Manufacturing

[edit]

A muffin top is made with flour, typically with the leavening agent being bicarbonate of soda, with butter, eggs, and flavorings/toppings, such as berries, chocolate, or savories. Muffin tops are traditionally prepared in either a muffin top pan[3], cake pan, or muffin pan, and in the case of a muffin pan the muffin itself would not be used and only the top would constitute the product.

In Modern Culture

[edit]

Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, muffin tops have become a prominent bread product. A 1997 episode of the sitcom Seinfeld titled “The Muffin Tops[4] features muffin tops as a prominent plot point. The character Elaine realizes a bakery only selling muffin tops would be successful, yet has difficulties figuring out what to do with the bottoms of muffins.

As well, many restaurant chains, especially in the fast food industry, sell muffin tops. McDonald's, in 2018, announced a plan to sell muffin tops in their McCafe breakfast menu.[5] As well, Panera Bread’s muffin top, called a muffie, is amongst their most popular menu items.[6]

However, muffin top has also emerged as a slang word, which is detailed in a separate article detailed here.
